In 43AD the Emperor Claudius ordered his general Aulus Plautius to take an army of 40,000 men and invade Britain. This was a year after Julius Caesar had first landed on the Island. Within three short months the Emperor felt safe enough to visit his new province. The first settlements were in what is now Kent. The rest came under rule during the next 40 years. The Romans themselves were to remain in Britain for 400 years in total and left a very rich heritage behind them.
